In November 2013, I returned to my country of birth. I had not been back to Korea for over twenty years. What I found on this long awaited reunion was at once both intimately familiar and incredibly foreign. My childhood memories were of a practically third-world country struggling to find its place in the world after years of war and military dictatorships. Now, Korea is a thriving country with a bustling economy, focused on the future while clinging tightly to its past.
